Default Libertyville Chevrolet Service - $140 to check Trans fluid level

I have been having some weird shifting issues with my trans after getting my torque converter put in. After doing alot of research it seems that I may be a little low on trans fluid. So I figured I have heard such great things about Libertyville Chevy I would stop in and throw a few bucks their way to check my fluid level. I don't have a lift or a place to do the work myself at the moment, which is needed for a sealed trans. I talked to a younger service writer, explained right up front that aftermarket work was done, and I wasn't looking for warranty work. I inquired what they would charge me to check the fluid level. $140, just to check the level, not add fluid or anything else. Needless to say I decided NOT to get the car looked at there, and also decided not to stop over to the performance shop to talk about my winter mods, I was planning.

Someone let me know if I am way out of the ballpark here in my expectation, I figured for just checking the fluid level they would hit me for $40 tops.

We all speak praises of the performance shop not the regular shop.

Never have dealt with them nor do I know what it would cost to check fluid levels. Who did the original work? Maybe go back to them.

Or it seems the performance shop has a good rep. Maybe go talk to them about your winter mods and they might check it for free since you are looking into doing work with them.

It is a shame the service shop is so crappy, if the performance shop is so great. It may have cost them a cam install. Since my warranty is basically shot anyway, I don't NEED to go to the dealer for the work.

The shop who did the original work is a little over an hour away and Libertyville Chevy is about 5 minutes from my work, I was just hoping for a few bucks to see if that was the issue. The original shop has already told me bring it back, and they will get to the bottom of it.

they where probably talking a full 1 hour diag fee for that price. i asked my trans tech and he said that isnt too far off because to get an accurate reading you have to have the trans temp in a tight window, rack it and pull the level plug (depending upon what was in the way)... half hour would be ok as well.... that would be 67.50 (or less) here if you wanted to come here and have us do it.

Thanks for the feedback, I guess I am just a little shocked that something In my old cars I checked in 2 minutes with a dipstick is now such a PITA.

Thanks also for the offer to bring it down there, but Aurora is even farther than the shop that did my work, I will just have to take it to them this weekend.

Dang, that's a lot of money to look at a dipstick!

Kidding... Man, that's just crazy.. gone are the days of quick and cheap service on cars... At this rate, one will need a Ph.D. in Auto and Computers just to pop the hood.

I agree Can't imagine what it would cost you to get your tires rotated

I couldn't resist and I blame Randy.

But seriously... It does seem like a lot to me as well.

It's cause there isn't a dipstick, it's a sealed trans that you have to rack to check
